Foster a Dog

Fostering is the heart of what we do. Because we have no physical shelter, every dog we save depends on a foster family willing to give them a safe, loving place to land.

Why fostering matters

True North Rescue Mission is 100% foster-based. We have no kennels and no shelter building — which means a dog can only be saved if a foster home is ready to receive them.

Every foster opens a spot that lets us pull one more dog from a high-risk situation. Fostering keeps dogs out of shelters and in warm homes, helps them decompress and learn to trust, and gives us the insight we need to match each dog with the right adopter. Whether for a weekend or until adoption, you make the next rescue possible.

You're never alone

What True North provides

Fostering should never cost you out of pocket. We cover the essentials so you can focus on giving your foster dog love and stability.

Full Vetting & Medical Care

All veterinary care is covered by the rescue — vaccines, spay/neuter, microchipping, and any treatment your foster dog needs.

Supplies When Needed

We help with food, a crate, and other essentials so the cost of fostering never falls on you.

A Support Network

Our volunteer team and fellow fosters are on call for guidance, training tips, and troubleshooting along the way.

Adoption Marketing

We handle applications, screening, and promoting your foster dog so you can simply share their personality.

Transport Coordination

We arrange transport to vet visits, meet-and-greets, and the dog's eventual forever home.

Flexibility

Foster for a weekend, a few weeks, or until adoption. We work with your schedule and your comfort level.

From application to adoption

What fostering involves

You provide the home and the heart; we provide the rest. Here's how fostering with True North works, step by step.

1

Apply & Match

Tell us about your home and what kind of foster you're equipped for. We match you with a dog that fits your space and lifestyle.

2

Welcome Them In

Give your foster dog time to decompress and settle. Provide food, shelter, exercise, and plenty of patience and love.

3

Share Their Story

Snap photos, note their quirks and progress, and help us show adopters who this dog truly is.

4

Send Them Home

When the right adopter is found, you've helped a dog complete their journey — and you can foster the next one.

Is fostering right for you?

Foster requirements

There's no perfect home, just a willing one. A few things we ask of every foster:

  • Be at least 21 years old and able to provide a safe, stable environment.
  • Have approval from your landlord if you rent, and agreement from everyone in your household.
  • Provide a daily care plan — puppies and dogs in recovery shouldn't be left alone for long stretches.
  • Be willing to transport (or coordinate transport) to vet visits and adoption meet-and-greets.
  • Keep your foster dog up to date on the care plan we provide and communicate openly with our team.
  • Introduce resident pets slowly and safely, and let us know how the household adjusts.
  • Sign and follow the True North Foster Agreement before bringing a dog home.

Before you bring a dog home

The Foster Agreement

Every foster signs our Foster Agreement first. It spells out what True North covers, how medical decisions are made, and what we ask of you while a dog is in your care — so everyone, especially the dog, is protected.

Our commitment

The rescue retains ownership and covers all approved veterinary care, vaccines, and spay/neuter for your foster dog.

Your commitment

Provide a safe home, follow the care plan, use only rescue-approved vets, and never rehome or transfer the dog on your own.

Health & safety

Report illness or behavioral concerns promptly, and contact us before any non-emergency medical decisions.
